Glass: The magic of nature transformed by man

27.02.2025

Have you ever wondered what lies behind a simple glass? Behind every glass plate? Glass is one of the most fascinating materials humanity has ever worked with—a unique combination of science, nature, and art that has accompanied us for millennia.

But how is glass actually formed? And how does a simple raw material like sand become transparent, elegant, and durable? Let’s find out together.

The History of Glass: from a Chance Discovery to a Symbol of Elegance

The journey of glass began around 5,500 years ago, when rudimentary glass beads were created for decorative purposes in Mesopotamia. In ancient Egypt, glass became more sophisticated, with jars and containers used to store precious oils and perfumes.

But it was during the Roman Empire that glass truly evolved. Thanks to the invention of glassblowing, it became more accessible and started to adorn homes, villas, and temples. In a short time, glass was no longer just a practical material—it became a symbol of status and beauty.

How Is Glass Made? The Science Behind the Magic

Although we often take it for granted, glass is the result of an incredible process. It all starts with a simple raw material: silica-rich sand.

Unique transparency: it’s during the cooling process that glass gains its transparency and strength, the very qualities that make it so special.

Extreme temperature: sand is heated to about 1500°C. At this temperature, the grains melt and transform into a viscous liquid.

Cooling: the liquid is shaped and then allowed to cool, taking the desired shape—whether it’s a bottle, a glass, or tableware.

In nature?

Glass can also form spontaneously! It can happen during volcanic eruptions, when magma cools rapidly to create obsidian, or even when lightning strikes sandy ground, creating natural glass formations known as fulgurites.
