In 1950, a meeting of visionary minds gave birth to the Vetreria di Borgonovo. The three founding partners, Francesco Piccioni, Icilio Cantoni and the Tuscan master glassmaker Mario Marzini, driven by a common passion for glass, decided to start the industrial production of glass objects for home use. Their intuition proved to be winning. The company grew rapidly, quickly reaching 700 employees and occupying a 2,000 square metre factory.

Since the 1960s, Vetreria di Borgonovo has excelled for its constant drive for improvement. Significant investments in automation and new technologies have led to a complete automation of the entire plant.

60s

1987

In 1987, after forty years of exponential growth, the management structure changed with Pierfrancesco Piccioni, the second generation of the family, who joined the company with the mission of taking forward his father’s legacy, combining tradition and innovation in the world of glass.

The last two decades have been a further turning point for the company. Significant investments in industrial equipment and in developing know-how have led to the enlargement of the plant (which today covers 52,000 square metres) and to a doubling in production capacity. In addition, the acquisition of the company, Decover Srl, has allowed Vetreria di Borgonovo to expand its range of products and services with the introduction of glass decoration, thereby consolidating its presence on the market and enriching the range of solutions available to customers.

Today

Today, after more than 70 years of activity, the set-up and structure of the company have undoubtedly changed. New technologies, new objectives and new needs have influenced the work of the Vetreria di Borgonovo. However, even after decades, the company’s identity has remained unchanged and perhaps even strengthened: an artisan, perhaps almost artistic, attention to quality made in Italy, that same quality that has always been the company’s trademark, has allowed it to develop so much over time.

Technology

The production area uses two, ultra-modern kilns. One has a maximum capacity of 110 tonnes of glass a day and the other 60 tonnes a day. The kilns feed nine production lines. The factory produces 45,000 tonnes of glass a year, in 130 million pieces and in 500 different shapes using a unique type of superior quality glass which is derived from the fusion of silica sand and addition of fluxes, bleaches and refiners. The glass used in the production process is extra-clear (lead-free) and the product is shaped through pressing and press-blowing phases.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT

Over the last decade, Vetreria di Borgonovo. which has always been sensitive to environmental issues, has made significant investments to considerably reduce its impact in terms of emissions and consumption. Following this guideline, at the beginning of 2011 the Company installed a photovoltaic system on the roofs of its warehouses for the production of clean energy. With an exposure of 8000 square meters of solar panels, this actual power plant, with a power of 966 kW, is able to produce over 1.1 GWh/year which is entirely used for production.

In terms of emissions into the atmosphere, in March 2021 the construction of a filtration system for effluent from melting furnaces was completed, which resulted in a reduction of more than 95% of dust in the atmosphere. Together with the filtration plant, a thermal recovery plant for the effluents of the melting furnaces has been put into operation, which allows the production of electricity of over 1.6 GWh/year.

Significant investments have affected the entire production cycle, with a reduction in energy consumption (through use of the most modern lighting devices and high-efficiency machines) and noise emissions.

A policy attentive to the recirculation and reuse of resources has resulted in a reduction in the production of waste by more than half, including waste sent to landfill. Use of the best available technologies in terms of water treatment plants has resulted in a reduction of 48% of the volumes of water extracted.
